Wild land management may appear to be a contradiction in terms. Yet virtually all land is or has been under the direct influence of man's management. Even 'non-intervention' is a form of management and in most cases 'doing nothing' is not an option because of invasive non-native species, pollution, visitors etc.
The John Muir Trust's Management Standards for Wild Land describes management that should ensure the sustainable use and improvement of wild land. The aim is to promote sensitive use by man of wild land, recognising that active participation of people (residents and visitors alike) is not only inevitable but essential. John Muir himself established a legacy of active participation in the management of wild land.
The Standards are intended primarily to describe the land management the John Muir Trust aspires to on the land it manages. Thereafter it is hoped that the standards can be implemented and monitored by partners and others with an interest in wild land.
